Shopify vs GoDaddy: Which Website Should You Use to Buy a Domain Name

When it comes to registering a domain name for your website, you have two options – you can register the domain directly within Shopify or you can purchase the domain on a third-party website like GoDaddy.
Both options are great and it all comes down to whether you need a domain name or a domain name + website.
In this article, we will discuss both options so you can decide which one is better for you and your website.

Register Your Domain Through Shopify

Within the Shopify ecommerce platform, there is an option where you can purchase a domain and they will register it for you. Everything will be set up for you so you have nothing to worry about.
Shopify also requests an SSL certificate for you. The SSL certificate is requested automatically and is required to encrypt and protect your store whenever you process online payments.
One important thing to keep in mind is that you can’t register domain extensions. For example, if you want to use a local domain extension such as .uk or .de or something unique, you will have to use a third-party service like GoDaddy to get that domain name.
The biggest advantage is that no configuration is needed. The automated setup makes the domain name registration process as easy as possible.
Shopify makes it easy to find the perfect domain and manage everything including the domain, subdomain, email forwarding, and more.

Buy a Domain Name on GoDaddy

The benefit of purchasing your domain name on a website like GoDaddy is that you pay less. In other words, if you want to save money when registering a new domain, GoDaddy might be your best choice.
The Shopify domains cost a little bit more.
Another difference is that on GoDaddy you have to edit the domain servers and use the DNS records which might be complicated for some users, especially for beginners.
It is accident GoDaady has more than 19 million customers and over 78 million domain names under their management.
Registering a domain on GoDaddy is pretty easy. Here are the four steps to get your domain registered in no time:
➢ Choose a domain name extension. You can choose from a wide selection of domain extensions.
➢ Think about what you would like to add on the other side of the do. You could add your business name, your specialty or something else.
Type the domain you want in the search box and GoDaddy will inform you whether that particular name is available.
➢ Choose a name, add it to your cart, and check out. That’s it – you are now an official owner of your own domain.
GoDaady is cheaper, but only if you register a domain name for one or a maximum three years. If you are looking at the long term, registering a name through Shopify is the way to do.

How to Connect Your GoDaddy Domain to Shopify

If you already have purchased a domain from GoDaddy, if you want, you are still able to transfer your existing domain name and allow Shopify to host it.
The minute you transfer the domain, management of the domain name automatically moves to Shopify. This means that you pay for your domain, renew the domain, and adjust your domain name settings in your Shopify admin.
Shopify doesn’t provide email accounts as part of the domain services, however, it does provide unlimited email forwarding accounts.
Let’s see how can you connect your existing GoDaddy domain to your Shopify website:

Step 1: Access the Shopify Account

The first thing you need to do is access your Shopify admin. Log in by entering your store address.
If you are new to Shopify, click “Get Started” and create your account.

Step 2: Click Domains

The next thing you need to do is click the Online Store and on the left side you will see all the sections available.
Find the Domains section and click on it.

Step 3: Connect Existing Domain

We are connecting an old or existing GoDaddy domain name to Shopify so go to Domains and click the Connect Existing Domain option.
You will be required to enter the domain that you have just transferred. Once you entered the domain name, click Next.

Step 4: Connect Automatically

Shopify will detect the domain registrar you have used (in this case, GoDaddy).
Since the process is controlled by Shopify, everything is done automatically. Click the Connect Automatically button to connect your GoDaddy domain.
Once logged in, your DNS settings will be automatically modified and your domain name will connect immediately.

Step 5: Sign In to GoDaddy

You will then be asked to sign in to GoDaddy. Sign in by using the details on where you bought (registered) the domain name.

Step 6: Proceed With the Changes

GoDaddy will inform you that they will be disconnecting your domain from the DNS records. From that moment, your domain is connected to Shopify’s DNS records.
To proceed with the changes, find the blue Connect button and click on it.

Step 7: Go Back to Shopify

GoDaddy will update you with a Success confirmation. Your website is officially a Shopify domain. Click the Close button and go back to Shopify.
Shopify is going to conform and verify the connection of the domain name. Then, you will receive a message saying your domain is now connected with the Shopify platform.

Step 8: Change Primary Domain Link

Next, you need to make sure your customers will visit your original domain and not the Shopify branded domain name.
For that purpose, you need to click Change Primary Domain link and choose your domain name. Click Save.
You have connected your domain to your Shopify account.

Final Thoughts

Both options are great.
We’ve used Shopify and third-party services to purchase domains and it was pretty simple in both cases. However, registering the domain names directly with Shopify gave us less technical headaches.
The question you need to ask yourself is whether I want to save money or have less technical worries?
If your idea is registering a domain and running an online store, Shopify is a better option for you. If you already have a domain name, you can connect it to Shopify and start selling almost immediately.
